Up for vote in France: the bill for the future of agriculture, food and forestry

September 19th 2014

French ProduceAfter almost one year of debate at the French Parliament and Senate, the French bill on the future of agriculture, food and forest was up for vote in September 2014.

It lays foundations for some promising improvements, to name a few: agro-ecology is encouraged, and tools are proposed to fight land artificialisation and urban sprawl in order to preserve agricultural land. Additional efforts to limit the use of pesticides are also planned.

Some interesting references to food can also be pointed out.

Within the framework of the National Food Plan, the French law eases the establishment of food plans at local level aiming at better connecting relevant actors and bringing consumers closer to producers. In this perspective, short food supply chains, especially for organic products, are promoted.

Moreover, this new bill intends to encourage information and education on food at school. In addition, the national plan on food will have to provide better information to consumers about the origin and way food is produced.

With this bill, WWF expects effective improvements with the implementation of a French food and agriculture policy with more respect for the environment.
